The focus of Thylogale is its rainforest and
native wildlife. An assessment of the property done for Nature Refuge
status by the Queensland Department of Environment in June 1996 described the
property as “supporting rare and threatened plant species that
represent a habitat type that is not represented in the National Park
Estate….. and the land supports a diverse fauna assemblage.” The
property is also dedicated as ‘Land For Wildlife’. Thylogale
is situated in
one of the most ecologically div Thylogale Nature Refuge is 8 ¼ acres of mostly Tropical Rainforest located in the mountains to the west of Port Douglas in Far North Queensland. This unique property has two distinct forest types. The majority is densely vegetated with well developed rainforest that has been classified as Complex Notophyll Vine Forest (Type 5) by Webb and Tracey. The remaining area of closed forest has been classified by Webb and Tracy as Vine Forest (Type 12b). From a botanical point of view, the high conservation value of the property comes from the nine known, rare, threatened or endangered plant species that it supports. Most significantly it is the largest protected habitat for the endemic and highly endangered tree Sankowskya stipularis. We have instigated a voluntary conservation agreement with the Queensland Department of Environment to provide permanent protection to our rainforest and for its wildlife. Over 75% of the property has been declared a protected Nature Refuge and the entire property is dedicated as Land For Wildlife. Thylogale is one of those rare places on earth where man and wildlife, sharing land and resources, live together in a respective and harmonious relationship.
