This is the kitchen
of Tom Tansey's home in Snitterfield in the late C19th.
Tom (1845 -
1907) used to sit in his favourite chair by the fire, with a stumpy old
clay pipe in his mouth (which the family called his nose warmer), and the
cat "Moses" on his knee.
There was also a big
brick oven in the wash-house, like a baker's oven.
It was filled with
wood and when the fire had burned to glowing ashes it was raked out and
the oven would be ready for the dinner. A wire triangle in the baking
tin held the meat and a Yorkshire pudding underneath. The neighbours
would
bring their dinners
to be baked and were charged a penny to help pay for the wood - they would
bake pies and tarts for the week.
