Further information: 1. CB radio communication is not the same as using a mobile phone. Only one person can talk (or transmit) at a time. Your conversation is NOT private (the voice scrambler function provides the best privacy) and others may listen in and transmit on your selected channel. 2. Please read the instruction sheet provided carefully before using the transceivers. Please familarize yourself with CB operations regarding selecting a channel, using repeaters, swearing, rude or abusive language etc. 3. The transmission range will vary greatly depending on the location and the surrounds. With the DC1028, the 5Km range is only for outside line-of-sight rural operation. In urban areas the transmission range reduces to 1-2Km. In the inner city 0.5-1.5Km. Inside buildings 0.5-1Km (some highrise buildings have devices that enhance UHF communications however). In woodlands or in hilly terrain the range will also be significantly reduced! 4. UHF stands for Ultra High Frequency. 40 channels or frequencies are available to transmit (TX) or receive (RX) on. Channel 1 is 476.425MHz through to channel 40 which is 477.4MHz. Note channel 5 (476.525MHz) is reserved for emergency use (000 or 911 type emergencies) and channels 22 and 23 are not available on 38 channel units. 5. The repeater or duplex function can operate on channels 1 to 8 only. A repeater is a high power transceiver normally installed by the government (it's like mobile phone base station) which receives transmissions on channels 31 to 38 and retransmits on channels 1 to 8 respectively. It is mounted on high ground to give maximum coverage and operates at much higher power (up to 21 Watts) to give extended range. Please be careful not to turn on the repeater (REP) mode accidently! 6. CTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System) or Privacy Code allows you to hear only transmissions using the same code (1..38) on the same channel, effectively blocking out unwanted transmissions. Remember, with this enabled, your transmissions can still be heard by others but their transmissions cannot be heard by you!
Operational Tips: 1. To turn on the CB, press and hold the power button for 3 seconds (just like a mobile phone). To turn it off, press and hold again. 2. The Monitor (M) function turns off squelch and allows low-level signals to be monitored. This should be used when selecting a channel and when communication becomes difficult. 3. Please turn off your transceiver when told to do so (anywhere they ask for mobile phones to be turned off). Obey signs at hospitals, petrol stations and other hazardous areas (e.g. if it says 'No Smoking' because of flamable material then it's best to turn off your transceiver). 4. Clip one of these to your kid so you can call them home whenever they're needed (e.g. dinner time). No more searching the neighourhood for them! 5. What about at the supermarket or shopping centre? Spouses can each carry one. No more time wasted in searching for each other or making expensive mobile phone calls! 6. With the VOX (voice activated) setting you're allowed three levels of sensitivity - this controls the level of sound which triggers transmission. With motor-bike communication, use the lowest VOX setting and a full helmet to reduce wind noise. The microphone can be taped inside the helmet! 7. What about when you are travelling around Australia or New Zealand. I recently did a trip around Tasmania and our mobile phones were next to useless (on the Optus network) so I wish I'd taken a set of these CB's instead! Also use them to keep in touch when out walking, mountain-bike riding, hang-gliding, ballooning, skiing etc. etc.
