QM1538 (shown above left)
Sorry, no longer available. But don't despair better quality meters are available that do the same thing and, in fact, use the same software! So if you've spent hours writing software for the QM1538 you don't need to modify it because the Q1078 (without temperature probe) and the Q1080 are equivalent.

Q1078 (shown above right)
This quality meter from Uni-Trend (part no. UT60A), has similar features and accuracy to the QM1538. This digital multimeter features auto-ranging (with manual override) and includes a computer interface (serial or COM port connection). A USB adapter is optional. Also features; 3.75 digit (3999) large 18mm high display sampling 3 times per second, 10 Amp current measurement, continuity test with buzzer, diode test, resistance, capacitance, frequency and duty-cycle measurements. Provided on the meter is a data hold and a relative (zero) button. It measures DC Voltage to 1000V, AC Voltage to 750V RMS or 1000V peak (40-400Hz), Resistance to 40M ohm, Capacitance to 100uF, Frequency from 10Hz to 10MHz and Duty Cycle from 0.1% to 99.9% (10KHz max). Overload protection on Resistance, Capacitance, Frequency and Diode tests is 600 Volts peak. Fused protection on uAmA and 10A terminals (max. 10 second operation time at 10A). The RS232 interface is optically isolated to 1000 Volts RMS. Input resistance on voltage measurement is 10M ohm (except 400mV DC range). Accuracy: DC Volts 1%, DC Amps 1.2%, AC Volts 1%, AC Amps 2.5%, resistance 1.5%, capacitance 4%, frequency 0.1%, duty cycle 2.5%. The Uni-trend meter complies with standards IEC61010; in pollution degree 2, CAT III 1000V and CAT IV 600V, separate 'uAmA' socket (less likely to blow the fuse), includes a detailed manual explaining usage and maintenance of the meter and software that saves data directly in Excel format (XML). Data can also be saved in text (TXT) or database (DB) formats. Procon Technology also provides additional software that then allows you to decide which is best for your application. We also provide an example program in QBASIC and VisualBASIC that shows you how to write your own 'special' application and acquire data directly from this DMM. Size 177x85x40mm (7.0x3.3x1.6") and weighs 300gms including 9V battery provided. Also comes with test leads, optically isolated RS232 computer lead, PC software and a 2 year warranty.

NOTE, the Q1078 does not measure temperature. See the Q1079 or Q1080 for temperature measurement. The Q1079 or Uni-trend UT60E, in addition to all the features of the UT60A, provides TRUE RMS AC measurement, temperature measurement from -40 to +1000°C (with wired thermocouple provided) and a backlit display!

Q1080 (click here to view)
The Q1080 or Brymen BM202 meter provides all of the features of the QM1538 with temperature measurement (with water-proof temperature probe) and wireless Electric Field (EF) detection (this alerts you to the presence of mains voltages). It also features an extended voltage range of 1000VDC or 750VAC and current measurement of 10A continuous and up to 20A for 30 seconds. The temperature range is stated as -20 to +300°C but it will display up to +1000°C. Note, the temperature resolution is 1°C and accuracy is +/-3°C. The meter has a 3-2/3 digit display (2500 count) and hence the maximum range of measurement is: 25M ohm, 25uF and 200KHz. Comes with protective holster (which can be wall mounted), quality gold-plated test probes, optically isolated RS232 cable, temperature probe, 2 x AAA batteries and software (this is the best software I've seen). A 2 year warranty is also provided. Optionally available is the Q1092 adapter and K type thermocouple fitted with miniature thermocouple plug.

NOTE, the modified Q1080 we provide is 100% compatible with the QM1538 software. i.e. if you have written your own software for the QM1538 you will have no problem using the Q1080 instead! We also provide example programs in QBASIC and VisualBASIC on CD-ROM. We also provide a set of clip test leads as a BONUS. Linux software and National Instruments LabView driver available.

QD5000 Velleman PCS10 4 channel 0-30V USB data logger, software included!

QD-5000 (shown above)
This low-cost Velleman PCS10 four channel USB recorder or datalogger provides four input ranges 3V, 6V, 15V and 30V. The range can be individually selected for each of it's 4 channels. An ideal unit for monitoring slow moving voltages (e.g. battery discharge, power supply fluctuations and control signals etc). Specs include: 10mV sensitivity (on 3V range), +/-3% full scale accuracy, 100 samples per second max. capture rate and 8 bit ADC (0-255). The software runs under Windows 98+. It provides a 4 trace chart recorder and 4 DVM (Digital Volt Meter) readout. The data can be saved in a text file and automatically converted to a graph in Excel. Also provided is a DLL for writing your own software in VisualBASIC, Delphi, C etc. Comes with USB cable (no external power supply needed), software and 1 year warranty. This unit is ideal for use in the laboratory, at school or home and for factory or field work, for datalogging, automated testing, monitoring and recording data. Can be screwed to any flat surface or DIN rail mounted.

Note, everything you need is included with these devices. With some other units you have to pay extra for the temperature probes, computer software and connection cables! Don't have a serial port? No Problem! Use the D-2340 attached to your USB port and "Bob's your uncle". This converter can also be used with QBASIC programs (and other DOS programs) to talk direct to the Q1078 and Q1080 meters!

Customer comments:'I received the package on October 1st, only 4 days in transit! The meters (two QM1538) work great. Thank you very much.' Mack M. USA 'What do they feed those Qantas pilots on? The package arrived Monday! That's as quick as if I ordered something from Maplin - and they're in Essex. Thanks and best regards' Iain Rankin, England.

Postscript: I'm continually amazed at what these meters can do (for the price). Did you know that whilst measuring AC Volts or Amps you can hit the Hz/Duty button and measure the frequency and duty cycle of the AC waveform being measured? No need to change to the 'Hz' switch position to do this! The graph below shows how simple it is to plot data obtained by the meters. The temperature probe was plunged into a beaker of ice cold water. The text file, with 100 data samples, was then loaded into an Excel spreadsheet and graphically presented. p.s. this was done by a 12 year old!

Excel graph of temperature vs time from data obtained by the QM1538 digital multimeter.

NOTE, customers have asked me why the QM1538 temperature reading on the computer is different to that on the meter? The QM1538 computer software corrects for non-linearity of a K type thermocouple (i.e. the computer provides an more accurate temperature reading). To turn this off, select 'Option' and 'Configure...' and click the 'K Type' option button. The QM1538 software can also be used with the Uni-Trend UT60A and UT60E, the Brymen BM202 and the Digitek DT-9062. For more accurate temperature measurement and inbuilt calibration see the Q1190 - click here.
