Fischertechnik has released a new computer-controlled robotic construction kit called INDUSTRY ROBOTS. The kit constructs four different robot arms and contains over 500 parts. Fischertechnik makes it easy to program and understand how robots work in industry. Build a robot with three axis movement and a motorised gripper or build a welding robot model just like that used in the car industry. The capabilities of this kit, together with an extensive range of software, ensures that the enthusiast never gets bored!

The fischertechnik interface unit provides eight digital inputs, two analog inputs and four bi-directional motor outputs. The two analog inputs on the interface may be used with potentiometers (for position control), light dependent resistors (for measuring light), thermisters (for measuring temperature) or other resistive devices. The ‘intelligent’ interface (30402) connects to any serial port and allows LLWIN programs to be ‘downloaded’ to it for independent operation from the computer. The interface may also be controlled directly from the computer in many different languages and programs.

The fischertechnik software, called Lucky Logic for Windows (LLWIN), provides a flowchart style of programming language, which is ideal for ‘real-time’ machine control. The language runs under Windows 3.1 (version 2), Windows 95+ and Windows NT (version 3). It provides a graphical depiction of the flowchart including; decision blocks for switch inputs, action blocks to control each motor and other blocks to increment and test up to 99 variables. New features include; a terminal block to aid testing and monitoring, time delay blocks, one-shot blocks, subprogram blocks and improved aids such as; automatic routing and the ability to add comments and graphics to the program page.

Procon Technology, the agents for fischertechnik in Australia, also provides software that allows each robot arm to be controlled step-by-step in a sequence of up to 999 steps. Full source code is available in QBASIC, C, TurboPascal, VisualBASIC, Dephi and VisualC++ for those wishing to make modifications to existing programs or to write their own programs. STOP PRESS: PC-LOGO and MSWLogo example programs now available!

The INDUSTRY ROBOTS kit (p/n 30408) comes as a separate construction kit without the interface unit or LLWIN software and includes four motors and gearboxes, eight micro-switches a total of over 500 parts. A complete kit (30408-2), with construction set (30408), interface (30402), power supply (Australian orders only) and software is also available.

The Industry Robots Kit makes an excellent addition to the Mobile Robots Kit.

The new Pneumatic Robots Kit (34948), with four pneumatically-controlled projects, also makes an excellent addition to the Industry Robots Kit.

EA SAYS OK
A three page review of the industry robots kit (30408) appeared in September 1999 issue of Electronics Australia magazine - Australia’s most popular electronics and technology mag!

Here’s what they said: ‘Good points: Exceptional manuals, High quality and professional design. Lots of programming options too. Bad points: You’ll need patience.’

Our comment: If you don’t have the patience then we’ll construct the model for you for a nominal fee when you purchase any COMPLETE kit!

Mr Peter Oskam of NZ says: 'I received the Industry Robot more than 2 weeks ago, and like the author in EA assembled the kink-arm robot version. With the help of the Check interface I soon had it running the sample program (from the software supplied - LLWIN). The manual and software are both excellent, thank you and fischertechnik.'
