ST3321 (shown above left)
This weather-proof head torch (model no. HLX-313A) will give out a blindingly bright white light (up to 30 lumens) like no other small LED torch you have seen. It is so bright that it is not recommended to look directly into the beam and it is recommended that children be supervised whilst using this torch! The state-of-the-art 1 Watt Luxeon LED (Light Emitting Diode) should never need replacing. It features a water resistant case, it is extremely light weight (130gms or 0.3lbs with batteries) and comfortable to wear making it ideal for such things as night fishing, caving, orienteering or wherever a bright light is required. An adjustable headpiece enables you to direct the beam at the required angle. It has three brightness levels 100%, 50% and 25% and an emergency flashing mode, operates for over 6.5 hours at 25% intensity (3 hours at 50% and about 1 hour at 100% using alkaline batteries) and has a power indicator to show you the remaining battery life. Comes with 12 months warranty and 3 AAA batteries are included FREE. We recommend using re-chargeable NiMH batteries (3 x SANYO eneloop AAA). This torch provides the whitest light of all the LED torches shown here and is great for fly fishing so we're told!

X0197 (shown above right)
At first glance this head torch looks similar to the ST3321. However, to be honest, it is a cheap copy but surprisingly with improved operation! At one third the price you won't be worried about giving the kids one of these to take on a school camp or using it on a bike where it could be lost or stolen. And, whereas we recommend you use rechargeable batteries with the ST3321, cheap alkaline batteries are fine with the X0197. In fact we recommend you use recharged alkaline batteries! This torch continues to operate with diminishing light output for days on one set of three AAA alkaline batteries. Press the button once for 50% brightness, again for 100% and once more for flash mode. It weighs 130gms or 0.3lbs with batteries, measures 70mm wide, 45mm high and 60mm deep. Great value and comes with batteries and 12 months warranty!

STOP PRESS: These head torches make a great gift for dad. It is very useful when repairing things around the home (car, garage door, central heating etc.) as you'll always have light on whatever it is that you're doing! Great also when you need to come inside to get tools etc. when working on oily or greasy things - you don't need to touch the light switch and get it all dirty! Head torches can also be used when navigating at night - as seen on the TV program 'The Amazing Race'.

ST3333 (shown above)
The Fotailite torch may not look like much and it may not come in a wide variety of colours (you can have any colour you like - as long as it's black) but, this torch is the start of a revolution in handheld lighting! With a state-of-the-art 1 Watt Luxeon LED (Light Emitting Diode) should never need replacing and, unlike most torches, provides a very bright white light. Which stays white even when the batteries are getting low! Using three AA batteries, the flashlight provides a bright intensity light for over 6 hours and then an ever decreasing brightness for up to 5 days! The torch has a special lens which can be rotated to focus the light or can be removed for a general flood light effect. The torch is made of strong aluminium with 'O' rings to protect it against dust and moisture. The on-off switch is a simple push button under a rubber hood at the end of the torch. It measures 210mm (8.25") in length with a maximum of 27mm (1") dia. and a barrel of 17mm (0.7") dia. You can use re-chargeable NiCd or NiMH batteries with no noticeable difference in light intensity. One big advantage (over a conventional torch) is that even if accidentally left on, your rechargeable batteries will not fully discharge causing reduced life or worse - battery failure. The flashlight comes with a wrist strap, 3 x AA alkaline batteries, a 12 months warranty and a black presentation box with velvet lining. The good news is that you don't have to throw away all those accessories you might have bought for the 'Maglite'. The Head Band, Fibre-Optic Adapter, Hard Hat Adapter and Flashlight Friend can still be used with this torch!

ST3339 (shown above)
A 5 Watt handheld LED torch (model no. ALX553N) with the same dimming capability as the ST3321 (uses a DC-DC converter with 3 brightness settings - 100%, 50%, 25% - and a flash mode). Comes with wrist strap, belt pouch and re-chargeable 2000mAh NiMH 4.8V Panasonic battery pack and pulse charger (for longer battery life). It takes only seconds to remove and replace the battery pack and it charges in only 3.5 hours! The lens and reflector has limited focus capability but, more importantly, can be removed for a general floodlight effect. Ideal torch for the security industry. Now purchased by traffic police because of it's robust design and LED lamp. The ST3339 could honestly be run over by a truck and it'd still work! It has a 5 watt Luxeon LED that puts out an incredible 100 lumens. It measures 287mm (11.3") in length and 42mm (1.7") in diameter and weighs only 380g (0.84lbs) with batteries and 490g (1.08lbs) in pouch. Torch lasts 1.5 to 2 hours on 100%, 3-4 hours on 50%, 6-8 hours on 25% and 3-4 hours in flash mode. Rugged and splashproof design. More information on the ST3340 and ST3342: 1. The manufacturer's part number is SB-1018 and SB-3014 respectively. 2. Shaking the torch side to side, moves a powerful magnet through a coil that charges a super capacitor (1/3 Farad - the unit of capacitance was named after Faraday). Once charged and switched on, the white LED (Light Emiting Diode) provides light for over 30 minutes. To maintain a bright light however, switch the torch off and shake for 10 to 15 seconds every 2 to 3 minutes. 3. Environmentally friendly and saves money - no batteries or lamps need replacing! A handy hole at one end allows the torch to be hung on a hook or allows a wrist or neck strap (not supplied) to be attached. 4. Michael Faraday (1791-1867) was an English scientist. His law of induced voltage says, 'The voltage induced by a magnetic field cutting the turns of a coil depends upon the number of turns, the intensity of the field and how fast the field moves through the coil of wire.' i.e shake the torch faster and it will charge quicker! 5. Although Faraday's law was discovered in 1831, this torch is only possible because of modern technology. (a) a super powerful magnet made from "rare earth" compounds. (b) a miniature super capacitor that stores the electical energy generated. (c) a super bright white LED (Light Emitting Diode) which provides a very efficient light source. 6. Waterproofing of the torch is assisted by an on-off switch which is magnetically operated. Internally, a very reliable reed-switch is used to turn on the light. Note, this may be turned on by other magnetic sources - such as another one of these torches! 7. Warning, these torch magnets should be kept away (30cm or 1 foot) from magnetically sensitive items such as; credit cards, floppy disks, heart pacemakers, magnetic tapes, CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) - e.g. TV, computer monitor etc. 8. Disclaimer. Despite what it says on the packet and instructions this torch may not last 'forever' as electronic devices do fail. It is recommended that you check your torch regularly.

.LED torches: Here's what Silicon Chip magazine had to say in 2003: 'In the last 12 months LED torches have finally arrived. This white LED torch provides a similar intensity light output to its incandescent bulb counterpart yet uses far less current from the battery. It gives a beautifully soft light beam which maintains a constant colour and similar brightness over the whole battery life. And the LED should never need replacing. ... (this) LED torch produces a natural white light instead of the yellowish light from torch bulbs.' One customer, who uses an LED headtorch for fly fishing, says "we should sell thousands of these LED torches". It seems that the superior white light output and the peripheral light (not just a single narrow beam) makes these torches ideal for fly fishing (and many other activities).
