Our schools are lucky enough to have Indonesian pen pals from a school in Ende, Flores. The students are corresponding with each other in a mixture of both Indonesian and English. Our children are writing basic and general information in Indonesian, and individual information in English. This gives children from both countries the opportunity to practice their second language. Furthermore, from experience I have found the children are less likely to write informative letters whilst they are coming to terms with another language. By including their native language the children are less inhibited by the grammatical apects and write more interesting and informative letters.
To help with letter writing in the classroom this list outlines the most common information in Indonesian that is included in the letters, with the English form as a reference.
