Volcanoes
For this theme we discussed the many volcanoes in Indonesia including Mt. Bromo and the eruption of Mt Krakatoa. We also looked at the subsequent creation of Anak Krakatoa. We looked at film footage of volcanoes erupting and discussed the scientific reasons for the action. This was done at various levels to suit the understandings of the grade levels.
The students were required to build a volcano in the sandpit with certain stipulations. They had to have bush or forests, rice paddies, a village, tracks, a river or water supply.
The volcanoes the children made were either erupting "lava" or fire. The lave one was a mixture of food dye, bi-carb of soda and vinegar. The fire one was a mixture of "sparklers" in a plastic cup. This made a spectular display!
